Fisheye lenses are interesting because of the beautiful distortions that they create, which sucks in everything so you could see the whole scenery in the frame. The center of the frame always has a normal look while the edges appear to be distorted. There are several fisheye lenses out there for both full frame and crop sensor cameras. The smaller the focal length, the more distortions -- for example, there are 6.5mm and 8mm fisheye lenses for APS-C cameras like this item below.

Fisheye lenses can have fun effects, but they can also produce amazing results when used correctly. For those of us who are on a shoestring budget or don't often shoot fisheye, a fisheye adapter might be a good alternative to a dedicated fisheye lens.

Handling

This 0.21x Fisheye Adapter comes in a box and protective faux leather pouch. It's a lightweight adapter that only adds little weight or size on top of your lens, and the total size would still be much smaller than your smallest telephoto zoom lens.

This adapter is screwed into the filter thread at the front of your lens. Therefore, it can fit to any brand of lens as long as they are the right filter thread size.

Speaking of size, I'm not sure if there are sizes other than 52mm and 58mm. I've been searching everywhere but only those two are around. If your lens filter thread is larger than 58, you can still use a step-up/down ring without the effect of vignetting.

Speaking of focal length -- if you're wondering what's the best combo, it works well from 35mm to 50mm. Wider than 35mm, vignetting will become distracting on the side. Used with lenses longer than 50mm produces halo or coma on the image, which will make it unusable. So there, either 35 or 50 only.

The rubber grip on the adapter has a smooth texture but it doesn't slip easily from my hand. It fits just tightly and hasn't loosened up after a long time of use. The barrel of this adapter is made of metal, and then a plastic plate inside that holds the glass. I thought that something was rattling inside, but tightening the rear part solved the issue.

Inside are 3 very thick glass elements. Only the front glass has a deep purple-blue coating like modern lenses. You can actually look into the glass with your eyes and see very crisp and vivid images, as if wearing eyeglasses.

It has a super close minimum focusing distance -- the glass can literally touch the subject! Most of the time, I set my lens to infinity to keep everything in focus and sharp.

Handling goes well so far for this fisheye adapter. But there are two things I want to rant about: 1) There's no filter thread, but you can attach it to the rear part, and 2) The cap keeps falling off! I fear that it might get scratched inside the bag since I leave it attached to the lens all the time.

Image Quality

Performance-wise, images seem to be very clear all over and good contrast.  A very small portion of the edges show chromatic aberration and color fringing if you zoom in to pixel level. But what matters to me is that the overall look of the images are fine.

What I like about this fisheye adapter is the dynamic range. Everything seems to be balanced -- bright areas are not overexposed or washed out, while dark areas show alot of details instead of just being black.

Despite minor quality issues, don't be afraid to use this adapter for fun and creative effects. If you want sharpness and accuracy across the whole frame, then it's time for you to get a dedicated fisheye lens instead.

Summary

Pros

No need for hood or special filters, it handles bright light very well

It evens out the dynamic range so that bright areas are not overexposed and dark areas appear lighter and showing details

Very small and lightweight

Best used with 35mm or 50mm lenses

It sells for 1/4 the price of a dedicated fisheye lens (around 2k Pesos is the normal price)

Excellent choice for those who don't often shoot fisheye

Excellent contrast, clear images

Cons

Cannot attach any filter at the front; but you can attach to the rear instead

The cap keeps falling off

It shows light orbs when pointing at bright light source; some people may or may not like this effect

Produces coma/halo if you set your aperture wider than f/3.5

Conclusion

My favorite combo for this fisheye adapter is with a 50mm lens -- which can now double as my portrait/street photography lens AND ultra wide angle lens! It looks just right. Everything is captured, nice dynamic range, overall sharpness, can be used for macro / product photography, breathtaking scenes.

Since I'm very fond of shooting fisheye, it's about time a dedicated fisheye lens made its way to my collection!

Samples

I'm using Nikon D5200, which is an APS-C crop sensor camera. I cannot tell you what it looks like on full frame camera so you can just guess. Most of the photos here are unedited, while the 28mm ones were corrected for the vignetting.

Used with 28mm

Not my ideal combo. Pronounced distortion is okay, but the sides have heavy vignetting that needs to be cropped or corrected. Vignetting is more acceptable when shooting videos. The images below were corrected for the vignetting, except the last.

Used with 35mm

This is a better combination that gives me ultra wide angle with only a small distortion on the edges. Vignetting is almost unnoticeable but you can slightly see it on the sides. No correction is necessary when you combine this adapter with a 35mm. The photos below are all unedited and as-is.

Used with 50mm

This is my favorite combo! It looks similar to the 35mm but totally free from vignetting on the side. I'm still able to get ultra wide angle shots with just as little distortion. I've shot the most photos with this combo. Take note that the first four photos below were shot with a 43mm. The rest were shot with 50mm

It does well with portraits too! As I said earlier, the 50mm combo is my favorite.
