It's mysterious... it's far away... it's so unpredictable... you don't know where she would appear next, what time and where.

The moon. Mankind was always fascinated by this beauty -- it has also been the subject of folktales and lores.

Sometimes she looks sweet, sometimes eerie and threatening like the peering iris of an eye.

The moon would never bore even if it's always been the same for ages. I guess it's just our perception that changes, which is why the moon is one of my favorite subjects for photography.

Taken just outside of our home. The moon appears distant from this location, so it still looks tiny in the whole uncropped photo even if I already used the 200mm end of the Soligor 80-200mm f/4.5 lens.

A bat took flight and was caught by the camera. Lots of these beauties in our neighborhood.

I was always waiting for the clouds to veil the moon, but it took a long time.
Now it looks smoking hot!

This crop is 1/32 of the original size. Amazing how so much detail could still be seen!

Some other day past, I took out my Nikkor 43-86mm f/3.5 for testing at another location. It was an elevated location and the moon appeared closer from there. In fairness, the cropped image looks clean and crisp.

This uncropped image is at the 43mm end of the Nikkor 43-86mm f/3.5

This cropped image is 1/8th of the original size, shot at the 86mm end.

In addition, I took a set of full moon photos last month, testing my Nikkor 55-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VR. That was the only telephoto lens I had at the time and the performance was understandably not meant for night or low light.

Achieved only with very slow shutter speed handheld (it was just a surprise).
Most of the shots were blurry.

My goal is to be able to capture the full moon of every month this 2016, and at different locations. Previously, I was able to get a super sharp full moon at full size (no crop) with my old Canon SX510 bridge camera. I intend to achieve the same feat with my Nikon D5200 by investing in a longer lens of 500mm or more.
