April 7, 2016.

The full moon phase had just ended, so now it's New Moon. With the absence of a full moon, at least this is a good time for a Milky Way photography.

It was already evening when I went to Manila Bay near Padre Faura. For my first ever attempt at star trails, I used the combination of Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 and 0.21x Fisheye Adapter. This is my favorite focal combo in the absence of an Ultra Wide Angle lens that can cost quite a lot. Of course, image quality is not as good as the real thing, but it gets the job done!

My first try was botched 10 minutes into the long exposure when some people passed by in front and bonked the tripod. (This is to say things politely.) It was good on my second try, with Shutter Speed of 25 minutes, aperture set to f/22, ISO 100.

The original photo was shot in RAW, then compressed to JPEG 2000px width for web uploading, which has an effect on the quality when zoomed in at pixel level. The fisheye combo and light pollution also caused some glowing in the right side of the image. Now I know better to do next time: long exposure of 2.5 hours at a more quiet and dim place outside the city!

Aside from the star trail, I also took my Tasco 1000-3000mm f/16-48 telescope/super telephoto lens to see how far it would go for night photography. The lens is obviously made for daytime use, but with a handheld slow shutter speed of 1/20" and ISO of 6400, there is decent outcome. For reference, I was near Padre Faura and the subjects were about 10 blocks away. Images below are left unedited.

This was just a practice shot in preparation for the big thing next time. Do you have any astrophotography tips to share?
