Here's a quick unboxing featuring the Battery Grip For Nikon D5xxx

REVIEW

When I first got my new Nikon D5200 back in August 2015, my first foray into digital SLRs, one of the first tools I got was a battery grip. It was the cheapest price for a brand new battery grip that I could find.

This generic battery grip fits well with the Nikon D5xxx series, and I'm not sure if this may or may not fit with D3xxx series since they both use the same EL-EN14 battery to power them up.

This battery grip is made of polycarbonate plastic and blends well with the look and texture of my Nikon D5200. The faux-leather is actually made of rubber but it grips securely when being held and also has a nice texture. Nothing rattles when I shake the camera.

It comes with a GPS Cable for connecting to the camera, so you could also use the shutter button on the base of the battery grip while on portrait orientation. This cable hasn't broken so far.

Upon opening the rear cover, there are 2 slots for 2x Nikon EL-EN14 batteries. The original battery fits and locks nicely. But the 3rd party battery (which I used to have and sucked big time) often gets discharged because it doesn't fit securely. You need to use original batteries. They're the best!

Aside from the benefit of longer power supply, this battery grip also provides excellent handling when shooting in portrait orientation. It DOES make alot of difference and my shots are more stable. The last bonus probably, is that the whole camera with battery grip look has a sexy appeal.

SUMMARY

Do you think that having a battery grip is practical or not? Let me just summarize the pros and the cons...

PROS

It actually provides support and easier handling/grip for the camera when shooting in portrait mode.

When shooting videos or long exposure, it helps that the power lasts double so you won't have to switch batteries halfway.

It adds an aesthetic appeal to the camera.

Battery locks securely and does not get discharged as long as you're using the original.

CONS

The main disadvantage is the added size and weight if you plan to bring only a small bag.

CONCLUSION

I haven't been shooting long videos nowadays, so battery life is not a problem even if I only have one. Therefore, this battery grip has been kept in the storage for 2 months and I actually put it up on sale.

This month, I was looking at this item again and my love for it was rekindled. Regardless of I'm just using one battery or the added size to the camera, it still fits just right on my small bag and the comfortable handling on portrait mode makes this really a nice tool to have.

If you shoot alot of videos, then this battery grip might come in handy so you won't have to change batteries often. Don't you hate it when the battery dies and you need to change right in the middle of an epic moment that would be gone in a matter of seconds? Lost opportunity!

Don't prioritize this if you're currently on a tight budget or don't often shoot videos. Save your money for something else or get this some other time. If you already have one now, don't sell it yet and think of the practical benefits.

Before we close this article, here are the last 4 videos that I've used this battery grip with...
