March 2, 2016.

When I got this lens late in January of 2016, it was plagued with haze and fungus on the glass. But this was a rare find for me and it meant very special to me. I'm glad to trade away that plastic Nikkor 55-200mm for this one!

There are 2 versions of the Soligor 80-200mm. An earlier regular version with 2 rings for focusing and zoom, while this one with me, the later version with 'C/D' (Computer Designed) marking which is a mark of the best quality from Soligor. Based on the serial number, the copy that I have was made by Sun Optic around 1982... this lens is just a year older than me! The first problem was the fungus and haze infestation. Despite this, image quality was surprisingly excellent and I've shot many photos that never needed editing/correction. The effect only became obvious at 200mm where things got slightly soft and blurry.

At 200mm, no crop. This was before cleaning.
A little sharpening was added.

My second issue was that the distance markings on the one-touch aka 'push-pull' zoom/focus ring did not align to the hyperfocal distance scale on the body, and it was also moving around loosely.

You can tell it's not aligned by looking at the M in 'Macro'
and the yellow triangle to the left of 80mm.

Today, I finally had the motivation to clean the lens myself. I'm not technically trained, nor an expert at this -- but I like being adventurous and experimental, so 'dissecting' this lens was the most natural thing for me to do. There are risks of course, and I concede to the consequences that might arise from my action. The challenge and learning is more rewarding to me than anything else.

Wrap it in tape!
A very simple solution to keep the ring from twisting out of place ever again.

It was a little complicated to put back together, I nearly pulled out all of my hair at this, but everything went back in place. After the cleaning, there was a significant improvement in image quality at the longer end of 200mm. I've also aligned the distance marking on the zoom ring. So there, problem fixed!
