If you want to get into the world of Macro Photography, there are a few ways you can do that -- each of them have their own pros and cons, but the macro filter is my favorite to use.

> Macro Reverse Ring works by screwing itself to your lens' front filter thread. Then you mount the reverse ring to the camera so that the rear part of the lens is now in front. The disadvantage here is that it exposes the rear element to dust.

> Macro Extension Tube is safer than the reverse ring because no parts are exposed. It works by attaching itself between the lens and the camera, therefore extending the distance to the sensor. Oftentimes, I have to complain about loss of light. So if you only have a kit lens with limited aperture, good luck to you!

> Macro Filter is my favorite because it simply screws on to the front filter thread of your lens. You can easily remove it without needing to un-mount the lens and expose the sensor to dust. Also, I don't experience any loss of light, so I can use the lens as normal. However, as I use greater magnification like +10, the edges become softer and some chromatic aberration becomes obvious. Still, I vote this as my favorite!

> A dedicated Macro Lens. They can give the best quality with sharpness and accuracy across the whole frame. But they do come at a cost. There are cheap macro lenses like Nikon's old manual lenses, for which you trade off other conveniences such as autofocus and using other exposure modes in the camera.

Here's using an extension tube for your comparison

Handling

It's Made in China and it might be safe for me to presume that this generic brand is really the same with all the other cheap filter brands out there. It took 3 weeks to arrive, and I noticed a crack on my +1 filter upon checking. It was only a small crack and I didn't want to be bothered by logistics.

Image quality doesn't seem affected by these Macro Filters when I put them in front of my lens. With greater magnification like the +10, image becomes softer toward the edges and show chromatic aberration. Stopping down the aperture helps to improve the image quality.

I'm very happy with these filters, and I often bring along the +1 in case I want to get closer than the minimum focusing distance specified on the lens.

Filters are a perfect way to get into macro photography on a shoestring budget. If you really want excellent picture quality, then you better set aside budget for a dedicated macro lens.

Test

Used:

Nikon D5200

Nikkor 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 (Manual)

Macro Filters +1, +2, +4, +10

All of the samples here were set to 1/60", f/16 (we want everything to be in focus!) and ISO 3200.

Each of the samples were shot at the closest focusing distance possible. The closest with the lens was 1.5 Meters or 5 Feet.

With a Macro Filter +1, the minimum focusing distance was reduced by half.
