The Soligor C/D 80-200mm f/4.5 Macro+Zoom MC is a telephoto zoom lens with constant maximum aperture. The lens is a push-pull design with a special macro feature at 80mm.

Soligor was a marketing company who outsourced production of its lenses to others (mostly to Sun Optic, then also to Tokina, Samyang, Komine, Kino Precision, Komura, Tamron, etc.). This lens, based on its serial number, was made by Sun Optic around 1983, a respected lens maker.

By 1982 (when this copy was made), advances in technology meant that companies were making better lenses. Such was this C/D lens ('Computer Designed'), which stood for Soligor's top-quality category of lenses. Unfortunately, the 1980s was dawn of the autofocus era, so many companies including Soligor started to die. One can say that 'autofocus' killed the optical stars.

This lens is special because it is a first for me in many ways. It was the first zoom lens I had that:
...has a constant maximum aperture
...was a one-touch 'push-pull' design (it was totally new to me!)
...I had to clean for fungus
...I had to open up and study its anatomy; it was so complicated!!!
...took me one day to disassemble and two days to put back together (I almost died!)
...was my first ever Soligor lens (first time I saw/heard it, but I'm a Soligor fan now)

Here's a look at the cleaning stage:

This is a new discovery for me as my first ever push-pull zoom lens. The handling is very nice, feels very light, and the focus/zooming mechanism is smooth, unlike some, that have a gummy drag.

In the normal range, the minimum focusing distance is 2 meters. Hmmm, not useable if I want to get closer, but there is a macro at 80mm. Simply zoom in to 80mm and then continue focusing toward the macro range. There, that adds flexibility to the lens.

As far as image quality, the maximum aperture of f/4.5 was a bit dark for indoor, but with my camera's low noise capability at high ISO 3200, that's not an issue. It's already very sharp and crisp before I cleaned it, and further improved after cleaning.

I love to use this lens especially for macros... it is insanely sharp a f/4.5, at f/5.6, at f/8, at f/11, at f/16 and at f/22.

Hmmm... I did notice color fringing wide open at f/4.5, which disappears from f/5.6 onward. The color fringing isn't noticeable at normal view, I only saw it when super zoomed in.

Don't expect much with bokeh (blurry background). It is capable, but not as pleasing as one gets with an f/3.5 or an f/2.8.

In summary, this is a nice lens to have on full frame. On crop sensor cameras, it's a bit tighter, which might be useful for portraiture, candid, wildlife and street shots.

  1. Hello,

I was wondering if this lens could work with a canon rebel t5i?
