Photography used to be something I never consciously thought of.

When I began my Ratzilla blog in 2010, it was an advocacy and educational site about pet rats. I survived without a camera. A year later, when I began to write about beauty products, that's when a camera became necessity.

A DSLR was not an option then due to budget, and I felt I'd only need one if I was seriously into photography as a hobby/profession. So I stuck with a Samsung digital camera and a Canon bridge camera for 4 years, until I finally got fedup with their limitations and sought a DSLR.

Why suddenly a DSLR? Full control. More options. Good glass. Vintage stuff. Challenge. That's it.

I'd hate to be a person that bought a DSLR only to use it once for a vacation then store it in the cabinet forever, or who bought one because I just want good images, or one who always sets the camera to Auto Mode as it were a point and shoot.

Doing research about the product that will give best value for money was the first challenge... it took me 6 weeks of thorough reading again and again, learning all the terminology and facts by myself. Then there's the 2 months of crying alone in my cubicle in the office because of the anticipation to save and finally get one.

One is not 'feeling mayaman' but merely showing dedication, passion and determination for the chosen art. Ito lang naman ang extravagance ko in life, I'm a simple person you know.

Then bam! August 18, 2015... here comes the Nikon D5200, which I often refer to as 'my buddy'. It was weeks of well done research so I know I'd never regret this decision and specific model.

The first 3 months of shooting were horrible (I blame my own skill)... being stuck with a kit lens, relying mostly on Aperture Priority Mode and stumbling alot on Manual Mode, yet practicing self control not to jump into a prime lens yet. Lots of horrible, overexposed shots. LOTS OF EDITING. But right from the beginning I already taught myself to go manual.

January 2016 was when my new blog was founded (as a sort of self-study and portfolio), Photo Journal By Rattus Yu. From this point, I made an effort to always shoot in Manual Mode and to get the images correct from the very setting, thus avoiding any alteration or editing later.

My buy and sell hobby followed in March. It's very fortunate that I come across many beautiful vintage lenses, to shoot with them and also to pass them on to others who might share the same interest. I'm a fan of old zoom lenses, particularly those with fixed aperture. Nowadays, modern lenses with fixed aperture will cost you an arm and a leg.

Anyone who'd like to try photography should be enlightened that your gear is always just a tool. Don't fall into the mentality of more features, more gear, vibration reduction, autofocus, latest technology to give you good photography. They won't, if you don't give yourself enough time to practice everyday.

Any hobby requires practice and discipline. In the end, don't forget what photography is about... it's a form of expression where the camera becomes the window for others to see your world.
