Mine is the pre-AI version from 1977.

Have you always been drawn to Nikon's 55mm macro lenses because they are the cheapest lenses around but legendary for their sharpness -- yet have always felt confused why there are too many versions and what each version is?

Yes, I felt the same way too! Which is why I have compiled a chronological overview of the versions available.

(I happen to own one, the 1977 Pre-AI version.)

Micro-Nikkor 55mm VERSIONS
=========================

1961

Nikon releases the reflex type preset-aperture version.

It goes down to 1:1 and is very rare nowadays.

This lens was said to perform super sharp at macro,

but horrible for focusing to infinity.

1963

Nikon releases the first 'Auto' diaphragm in 2 versions:

one with compensating diaphragm (Nikkor-P Auto 55mm f/3.5 Micro),

the other without compensating diaphragm (without the 'P').

The first version from 1961 went down to 1:1,

but it performed horribly when focused to infinity.

Nikon engineers made corrections to make a balanced compromise,

thus, it only goes to 1:2 from this point.

1973

Nikon started applying NIC (Nikon Integrated Coating) to this lens.

Lenses treated with this have a suffix of 'C'.

1979

Introduction of the f/2.8 AI

Take a look at how the aperture ring differs from non-AI lenses.

1986

Introduction of the Nikkor AF 55mm f/2.8s

The first AF version, same optical formula as before.

It's such a shameful design and ergonomics,
Nikon only made a few of these and didn't include it in its website.

1989

Introduction of the Micro-Nikkor AF 60mm f/2.8
