If you're looking for an all-around prime lens, try Nikon's Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5, the cheapest way for you to get into macro photography. Of the many versions that Nikon made from since 1961, the f/3.5 pre-AI (1977) is said to be the sharpest and best for macro.

========================================

The copy in my possession is the f/3.5 pre-AI version (1977). It had a scratch in the rear glass which often resulted in visible loss of contrast in the lower left corner of images when at f/32. I rarely use f/32, so this wasn't an issue. This lens produces nice glowing subjects for low light photography.

Summary

For

Sharp it is! (The 1977 pre-AI was said to be the best)

Contrast is good, but not overly contrast like later lenses that I hate so much. The dreamy look is nice.

Colors not too vivid, but soft like pastel

The front is protected by a built-in hood

Goes down to f/32... everything is in focus for macro work

Can produce nice 3D but not too blurry background effect on subjects

The glass is treated with NIC (Nikon Integrated Coating)

360-degree focus throw. I like how long the focus throw is when focusing at the macro range.

It's super cheap

Who needs autofocus? You're just paying twice the amount of money for an AF lens, then you really need to go manual to fine tune your focus.

I like the 1977 pre-AI version. All black is just better than the earlier chrome barrel versions.

Neutral

My copy had a scratch in the rear glass, so I avoid using f/32. The shots look unaffected for indoor and low light use. For outdoor, the effect may be a little distracting when you stop down to f/22 or f/32. Wider than that, images look fine.

Only goes down to 1:2. But I'm happy enough with what I get with that. The explanation why it was only 1:2: their first version goes down to 1:1 and was great for macro, but then it performed horribly for focusing to infinity. Thus, the compromise was to improve focusing to infinity.

Against

The only thing that worries me is that when the lens is focused on infinity, the rear glass protrudes. I'm afraid that I could scratch it if I put it on the table without its rear cap. Most of the time, I just put it on the table upside down.

Conclusion

After owning this lens, I thought that it was the most versatile lens EVER. I used it much more than my Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4, which is now gathering dust. You see, most of my photographs are product shots, flower shots, and especially MACRO shots. Which is why this is the perfect lens for me.

This lens is sharp and has zero distortion. I also like how it has a compressed telephoto effect when I shoot closeup, compared to those other zooms with macros that just merely let me get close. It's so special!
