Tamron's Adaptall was a popular series that started back in 1973. The concept of this design is to create lenses with generic mount, for which an adapter with a specific mount can be fitted (eg. Canon FD, Nikon F, Konica AR, Minolta MD, Pentax K, etc.)

The lens under review now is the Tamron Adaptall 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 (Model 40A). Sometimes it's very important to know what specific model the lens is, because Tamron releases several versions of the same lens. The 40A is basically an upgrade of the 22A. The 40A was designed to be much compact and lightweight than the 22A.

Summary

For

Nice zoom range covering 35mm up to 135mm

Very smooth zooming and focus

Maximum aperture ranges from f/3.5-f/4.5... most zooms nowadays go from f/3.5-f/6.3 and that's very dark.

This lens should show up in the market for the price of a modern day kit lens

Adapters are easy to find. Preferably buy only the authentic Tamron Adaptall adapters even if they can cost a bit. Those cheap Chinese adapter alternatives keep getting dislodged from the lens when you turn the lens with some force.

Macro goes down to 1:4 and you can use it in any focal range. You're not stuck in 35mm or 135mm only, like many zoom lenses with macro do.

Neutral

The range is nice for full frame cameras. On crop sensor cameras, 35mm may not be wide enough. 28mm is the widest I like to go on my Nikon D5200 (I rarely go to 18mm), so maybe a 28-135mm would have been nice.

Macro Mode is engaged by twisting the ring, which causes the barrel to extend. This design is what keeps the 40A smaller than the 22A. I personally prefer that one can directly access macro simply by turning the focus ring further, without needing to push any switch or lock the lens at a certain focal range.

Against

Aperture ring was snappy, but it feels a tight and needs coercion to turn. (Is it specific to my copy?)

Contrast drops when there's sun in the background. You need to use a hood with this lens when shooting outdoor.

Conclusion

I like this lens! The only thing lacking for me is the 28mm end. The focal range of 35-135mm would have been nice for use on full frame cameras, but most people are using crop sensor, and this would be equivalent to 50-210mm on my Nikon D5200.
