One fine day, I found this Tamron Adaptall 85-210mm f/4.5 in a garage sale in 'defective/for parts' condition. It only sold for cheap, so the main reason I really bought this lens was to study it.

The first thing that struck me was the beautiful craftsmanship of this lens. Turns out, this was from the Adaptall series, not the Adaptall 2 series, which were optically better and cosmetically different in design.

Also, Tamron made 3 versions of this lens. This has a model# CZ210 and was produced from 1976 until it was discontinued in 1978.

The issues with my copy was that it had fungus in the front and rear groups. The aperture blades were also stuck at f/4.5. There's really no way for me to make any samples and test this lens, other than to make a first impression of its physical features.

Likes:

Has built in retractable hood

The body feels well built, all metal and glass.

The Adaptall benefit. You can just buy one lens, get different adapters for use on different cameras (eg. Canon-Nikon) instead of buying several lenses.

Adaptall adapters are easy to find (I recommend getting the original authentic Tamron Adaptall adapters, not the third party China-made ones... they don't lock in place.)

Neutral:

I can't make any decent samples since it was plagued with fungus.

Dislikes:

Minimum Focusing Distance is 6.5 feet or 2 meters. With telephoto zoom lenses nowadays, we're used to having 'macro' that allows us to focus up to 1 foot or closer.

You need to re-adjust the focus after zooming.

The front filter thread rotates while focusing.
