The Tamron Adaptall AF 70-210mm f/4 (Model 47A) was one of those rare Adaptall AF lenses from the 1980s. My research reveals that this lens is optically the same formula as the highly regarded Tamron Adaptall SP 70-210mm f/3.5 (Model  19AH). When I checked international prices of used lenses for the Model 19AH, it was around P8,000... yikes!

History: So I found this Model 47A lens one day. It was a peculiar sight, being an AF lens, and I thought I might take a gamble at it. The interior glass had lots of fungus that needed cleaning, and the electronic chips of this lens were already fried. Now it can only be used as a manual lens, which is no big problem at all.

The lovely features of this lens is that it does not extend when zooming, the front does not rotate while focusing and the build feels sturdy even if the exterior case was plastic.

The lens has no macro mode, but a bit of compensation is that it's close focusing with its Minimum Focusing Distance of 5 feet. You see, the context is that many zooms of its range has a MFD of 7 or 8 feet.

I don't mind the weight, the only downside I see here is the need to re-focus the shot after zooming the lens. Otherwise, operating this beauty is very smooth.

I can only write about my first impressions of the build, considering its present condition.

Just a reminder: Use authentic Tamron Adaptall adapters only. Not that the third party ones were bad, but the one I had doesn't hold/lock the lens in place, so the lens keeps getting dislodged when I rotate hard enough.

Summary

For

It has autofocus, which can aid those with visual problems or difficulty focusing

Autofocus motor is built into the lens, so it will always autofocus independent from the camera body.

Does not extend when zooming

Front filter thread does not rotate while focusing

The build felt very sturdy even if the exterior was plastic

It comes in Tamron's Adaptall mount, so you can use it for different cameras

It does not have a color cast and images appear neutral color.

A very sharp lens even at f/4, considering it already had fungus

Neutral

My copy had fungus, but I did not take it for cleaning so the images were cloudy/soft contrast. My samples looked decent at f/4, but had better contrast from f/5.6 to f/22.

I didn't have the chance to test the autofocus speed.

It does not have vibration reduction, typical of lenses in that era. But I've shot this lens handheld and it wasn't a big issue even for videos. (Actually, the weight of the lens acted as the stabilizer!).

Minimum Focusing Distance is 5 feet, no macro mode. I put it here rather than in the 'Against' section, because lenses of this range typically have a MFD of 7 or 8 feet, so that's close enough like my Nikkor 55-200mm's MFD.

Against

It feels alot heavier than the many manual telephoto zoom lenses of its kind.

You need to refocus after zooming.
