November 15/17, 2016: New UWA Lens and Photowalk (La Loma, Sta. Cruz, Quiapo, Intramuros)
Mayon/Retiro shot with Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24mm f/4

This is a super long photo-heavy post.
Please bring some snacks along while reading.

Have you ever complained that the wide angle 18mm on your kit lens was never wide enough? Or sometimes, when shooting interior and group shots you still find yourself flattening yourself against the wall?

It's always felt that way for me. But something has opened up my perspective to a brand new world today -- the acquisition of an Ultra Wide Angle Lens! Suddenly, Satisfaction Came In A Chain Reaction. (Burn baby, burn...)

Bryan recommended to me long ago that an UWA would be the best lens that fits my shooting style. I like shooting street, buildings, interior and landscape. Which is why I have regrets not getting this versatile lens sooner.

While doing research 2 days ago, I came up with a list of candidates that includes the Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24mm f/4 DX, Version 1 (a popular choice for UWA since 2004!), the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX2 and the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. (Price-wise, the Nikkor UWA is apparently out of my league and not an option.)

12-24mm f/4 or 11-16mm f/2.8?... The one big factor for my decision was the focal range. I can do away with f/2.8 since at f/4, it's still possible to shoot in low light with handheld slow shutter speeds like 1/2". If you would pick a lens that has less range like the 11-16, then it will always be too short.

Thus, the Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24mm f/4 was the best compromise for me. My buying decision is justified because it is the perfect focal zoom for the purpose of street photography, journalism/reporting, and closeups. It can zoom from ultra wide at 12mm (FX = 18mm) up to normal/standard length of 24mm (FX = 36mm). It is close focusing (MFD = 0.3 meters) and can accommodate an occasional flower closeup or two.

November 15, 2016 - DAY 1 WITH THE TOKINA.

After the afternoon meetup for this lens in Metropoint in MRT Buendia/LRT EDSA. I took the jeep going to Recto, since I would be meeting a buyer in the evening. Just before 4.00PM, an accident along Taft Avenue corner Quirino stopped the traffic for a good 20 minutes. I got fedup, went down the jeep, and looked around to investigate. A few minutes later, the MMDA officer was already on his way and things got moving afterward.

A few minutes past 5.00PM and I have arrived at the end of the bridge in Lawton/Sta.Cruz. It was my dropoff point to put the lens in action, since it's still a few hours until the evening meetup. The next photos were shot while walking along the bridge until reaching the plaza in front of Sta. Cruz Church, then until Isetann Recto.

I always wanted to shoot the Sta. Cruz Church in its entirety, without seeing the cables when shooting from afar. That's why using this UWA from a close distance made this possible. Not even an 18mm can do that.

6.00PM. Since it was still 3 hours until the meetup, it would be nice to walk around and practice some more. From Isetann Recto, until I got to Morayta, to my alma mater Baste, then back to Isetann.

November 17, 2016 - DAY 2 OF SHOOTING WITH THE TOKINA.

2.30PM. After a day of rest for editing my articles, video and uploading everything, now the Tokina is ready for a sunny afternoon of outdoor shoot. Let's see how well it will do, no filters! First, around our lovely neighborhood and then along La Loma Retiro...

St. Lourdes Church. For those who plan to stalk me,
we live just around the corner.

4.30PM. Oh my... I forgot that at this holiday season, traffic could get so excruciatingly slow along Recto. So I got off the jeep along D. Jose and walked from there to Carriedo, then to Quiapo.

At the end of DAY 2, I thought there's still time to do some product shots, finish the video/photo album, and upload everything before the sun rises.

This is a DX lens (Nikon jargon for crop sensor/APS-C), but can be used on FX (full frame) starting at 15mm.

My point here is that it's no bigger than your average kit lens.
