LENS PORN: Tefnon/Kobori 75-300mm f/5.6 Macro High Definition Multi Coated Macro

Tefnon 75-300mm f/5.6 Macro H/D-MC (Canon FD Converted to Nikon Mount)

Oh crikey! I found this beautiful telephoto zoom lens with constant maximum aperture in mint condition. But like many of the vintage lenses I find around, those with Nikon mount are hard to come by.

The original mount of this lens was Canon FD mount. After removing the parts and figuring out how to alter some of the aperture mechanisms so that it would work, I finally completed the project after 3 months.

And here comes the exciting part... using the lens on my camera!

SPECS

Tefnon is a trademark name used by Japanese manufacturer 'Kobori'. One might feel scared or cautious because its name is highly obscure and unfamiliar to our ears nowadays. Digging up some information on the web turns up that they were a well-regarded manufacturer of high quality optics, who also made lenses for third party marketers like Vivitar and Soligor, among others. So rest assured that when you see a lens with the Tefnon brand on it, it's likely a good performer.

Summary

For

Constant maximum aperture

Nice lens for shooting video

Push-pull design is meant for capturing fast action scenes

Pleasing image quality wide open at f/5.6

Smooth focus/zoom ring

Short focus throw of 90 degrees

High quality optics

Sharpness and contrast is consistent from 75mm to 300mm

Beautiful color rendition, very saturated

H/D MC (high definition, multicoated) gives this lens the ability to handle flare and backlight very well.

At f/5.6, still useful for indoor shots.

Excellent build, feels like a work of art on my hands.

My copy came in mint condition, it still smells like new (it had a somewhat nice tobacco/burnt plastic smell to it)

It can be bought at a very affordable price nowadays.

Tefnon is a trademark lens name of Japanese manufacturer Kobori. They were a highly regarded optics company back in the day.

Neutral

This lens is rare to find so the mount that I need is hard to come by. Since it was in Canon FD mount, my project was to convert it to Nikon mount. After the conversion, everything was tested to work fine.

Against

Minimum Focusing Distance of 6 feet. This is normal for lenses of its era. Nowadays we are spoiled by telephoto zoom lenses that can focus very close.

Macro Mode at 75mm is not close enough for me. (I think it is about 1:4 magnification)

Conclusion

This is a fully manual push-pull lens. So what! You get a nice range of 75mm to 300mm with nice image quality throughout its range. But it gives you the advantage of a constant aperture. At the longer end of 300mm, you still get clear pictures when indoor or even low light (to some degree).

I couldn't think of any other disadvantage other than the MFD, the lacking macro range, and it's hard to find one in native Nikon mount.

Great for: Macro, flowers, street, portrait, sports, fast action, events, nature, light outdoor travel

Not for: Hardcore low light, hardcore macro/closeup
