In 1998, Nikon released this lens to much acclaim. It provides a wide angle of 28mm up to a moderate telephoto range of 105mm. Used on DX (Nikon's jargon for crop sensor cameras), the lens produces an equivalent of 43-152mm.

In 2004, Nikon produced an 18-70mm for DX, which translates to 28-105mm in full frame equivalent.

SUMMARY

FOR

9 aperture blades. The bokeh balls always look rounded instead of hexagonal when stopped down.

Multicoated glass. I just love the greenish sheen of the glass.

Pleasing image quality. I like that it is sharp but not razor sharp.

Macro can be used from 50mm up to 105mm. I usually prefer to use it from 70mm to 90mm.

Highlights are well controlled when shooting outdoor, but there is a bit of diffusion which I personally like. You can still see the details of the clouds even on a sunny day, AND at the same time see the details on the dark areas.

While most lenses of the same range would cut the maximum aperture to 1 stop from wide to the longest end (eg. 28mm = f/3.5, 200mm = f/5.6... that's one stop), this is only 1/2 stop, with 105mm at f/4.5, which is still plenty of light.

Takes in 62mm filters, which is very common, so you only use one filter size for all/most of your lenses.

Internal focusing.

It has electronics, so it can be used on any digital/film SLRs.

It has an aperture ring, so it can also be used on fully manual SLRs.

At 28mm, it's not a big or heavy lens and easily fits the palm of my hands. It's no bigger than your standard kit lens.

At this point, it was still Made in Japan, a sure benchmark for build quality.

NEUTRAL

My copy had an unreliable sluggish aperture diaphragm, resulting in overexposed images when I shoot smaller than f/8. Not sure if all copies are like that...

AGAINST

Noisy AF (more like 'Noisy As Fuck').

Engaging the Macro Mode means you have to zoom from 50mm first, then toggle the Macro switch.

This lens was meant for photography. The stiff/jagged zooming mechanism means that you get alot of shaking when zooming during a video. Add to that, the lack of Vibration Reduction present in many lenses today.

Rotating front filter thread while zooming... at least not while focusing!

Autofocus on motorized Nikon SLR's only.

Obviously, this is not a lens for low light photography. Given today's camera features, I can push it to 1/30" and ISO 6400 for these scenes.

CONCLUSION

This lens, despite being meant for FX and is more like 43-152mm on DX is actually my favorite lens for product shots, and maybe other tasks too. Believe me, when I say that I used this for 99% of my product shots since I got it.

There were many longer all around Nikkor lenses (28-200mm, 35-200mm), but for the purpose of closeups, it really gets down to a MFD of 0.2 meters making this lens more versatile. I like the effect when you shoot macros on telephoto range, the subject simply looks super flattering with the compression effect.

I really wouldn't sell it even if I now have a more appropriate Sigma DC 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro OS HSM (72mm Filter Thread) for my DX camera. But rather than let it sit around unused and gather dust, I'd rather someone else enjoy using this lens too.

If I'm shooting film or full frame and would pick any Nikkor lenses for all around use, I would go for this one as my first choice.
