February 14, 2017
Why limit yourselves to February 14, when every day of the 365.55 days of the year can be a day to love, do good, and say good things to others?
Today, I'm finally able to go to Binondo after a very long time of wanting to go there. As part of my photowalk series in the area, my story for visiting here is to show you the beautiful old buildings in that business district. From Sta. Cruz Church, I walked along Dasmarinas Street. There are plenty of old buildings along that street alone, and somewhere in Burke Street is the PMI Colleges. These old buildings have elegance and personality in every detail of their design. Here are the photos in chronological order...
Sta. Cruz Church
PMI Colleges in Burke Street
The Calvo Building
At the end of Dasmarinas Street is Quintin Paredes Street, where you will find the Jones Bridge and Pasig River (to the left) and the Chinatown arch (to the right).
There is a building along Quintin Paredes which does have sentimental value and fond memories for me, the Paramount Building (beside Jollibee). The last I went to that area was when I used to work there in 2004. That building is gone now and a new building is being built in its place. I recall the old style of its interior -- you will see an old elevator inside, you can smell old wood when you go inside the building, and inside each office, you will see those old brown wooden walls (they don't make it like that anymore). Moving on, it seems that the whole block is a shock to me. The once lively venue is now littered with abandoned buildings. I might as well document them before they become demolished someday. You will also find another point of interest there, which is Carvajal Street, where you will find plenty of Chinese restaurants, food vendors and drugstores.
At the end of Quintin Paredes Street, one can find the Binondo Church. There are still so many places to see and this is just to skim the area. We can look further next time. Here's the last scene for today...
