I have here a Micro-Nikkor-P 55mm f/3.5 (Pre-AI, AI'd) lens, a macro prime lens with standard focal length (on DX, it becomes a short telephoto at 85mm). This lens, specifically the f/3.5 version, was popular as being one of Nikon's sharpest lenses ever. It was optimized specifically for macro photography. (More about this lens in my lens feature.)

There were two versions of this lens, the compensating type (which gradually opens up the aperture as you focus closer), and the non-compensating type (this lens).

My copy with serial# 717110 was from 1974, imported from Japan and took 6 weeks before I got a hold of it. Its cosmetic appearance looks acceptable but needed some restoration, and the focusing helicoid had to be cleaned because of the gummy focusing. The glass inside this lens was in fine condition and the aperture blades were not oily.

It was my first time to open this type of lens, but by now I'm already familiar with Nikon's design through experience. After the cleaning, the rust and grime were gone, the markings now look brighter and it looks almost new. The focusing is also smoother now.

Please see the steps below...

The non-compensating type is identified as having straight claws that manipulate the aperture, as seen at the right.

Remove the screw that holds the aperture ring in place.

This is what makes the aperture ring to click.

Now the lens and focusing helicoid are separated.

Removing the focus ring rubber grip will show you the tiny screws that hold the focus ring in place.

This will show you the double helicoid. Be careful to mark the in-out of the pitch threads.

So much grime and dried up grease.

Now the threads of the double helicoid are clean and put back together. I put some markings so I can easily put them back together.
