The Zoom-Nikkor 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 is a push-pull type of zoom lens with variable maximum aperture. It was a great zoom lens for full frame cameras, ranging from a wide angle 35mm to short telephoto 135mm.

The story is that Nikon merged two earlier lenses, the 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 and the 50-135mm f/3.5 to create this more flexible range. Super zoom lenses like this was a new concept in its time, when it was introduced in the mid 1980s, and it also became a wedding phohtographer's favorite zoom lens. On DX, the focal range become 52-210mm.

In 1986, the AF version of this lens followed. I also happen to own the AF version before, and I can say at least the images with the AF version has good sharpness and resolution like a modern lens. I like the build of the manual focus version and how stylish it feels when you're using it.

The nice thing about this zoom is that even if it's a variable aperture lens, there's only one stop of light loss at the longer end, eg. the maximum aperture at 135mm is f/4.5. With modern zooms, it's usually stops darker at the longer end (eg. f/6.3)

Unfortunately, my copy had haze in the middle glass element. I was able to partially clean it, but the resultant images look to have a nice glow when wide open at f/3.5 and shooting in bright scenes like outdoor (because of the remaining haze). That to me, is not a handicap, as the images still looked sharp. But really, is sharpness and resolution all we think about?

And yeah, as for the macro feature, the AF version I had has it at 35mm, while with this manual version has it at 135mm, which is better. The macro here is continuous focusing, unlike the AF version, which requires to press a button every time and it is very annoying.

I have no complaints about this lens, even if it had haze which effect I liked. The only downside for me is that the minimum focusing distance is at 1.5 meters (same case with the AF version), and that is quite a long distance because I love to shoot closeup.
