The Olympus F.Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f/1.8 is a standard prime lens (short telephoto on DX) that was made around the 1970s. It is the smallest standard lens in history, a pancake lens. Yet for its small size is great image quality!

The colors when shooting with this lens appears to be pleasantly neutral. I also appreciate the neutral saturation of the colors, not too vivid, but has a delicate watercolor appeal.

It is a multicoated 50mm, and on APS-C cameras, make an excellent portrait lens. Excellent, because it is sharp without being overly sharp that it shows every detail on your skin. I also like this particular 50mm because it does glow a bit, which makes the image to look alive even for landscape shots. Don't you just hate the modern lenses that look sharp and contrast all over yet flat and dull? That's the vintage advantage.

The only thing I probably don't like is that it has 6 blades, which makes the bokeh balls appear hexagonal-ugly by f/2.8!

It's a tiny lens and the aperture ring is toward the front of the lens. I also love that it only has full-stop clicks. The focus ring was probably meant to have resistance, because it felt so even after relubing the helicoid.

There is a way to read the codes in this lens:

1) For lenses made before 1983, there is supposed to be a 3-letter code under the rubber grip of the focus ring. Mine says 'A73'. Meaning, it was produced in factory A around 1979 or March.
2) F.Zuiko.
3) Auto-S. S is for standard. Olympus designates their wide lenses as Auto-W, telephoto lenses as Auto-T.

Conclusion: This 50mm is something special for me. At f/1.8, it has a pearly glow that is a good thing. It's not super sharp ala macro lens, and the colors are neutral. The images look/feel delicate and seem to breathe with life when shooting with this lens. I've had quite a few 50mm's -- Nikkors, Pentax, Takumar, Helios, and others, but this has got to be my favorite!
