LENS PORN: Sigma 35-70mm f/2.8-4 Standard Zoom MC (1982)

Sigma 35-70mm f/2.8-4 Standard Zoom MC (1982)

Sigma used to be a third party budget lens (much like Tamron, Samyang and Tokina) back in the days of manual lenses, which was until the early 1980s. It was nice to look back because there were lenses that offered affordable alternatives, not everyone really needs an expensive lens, especially for general purpose use.

So here comes the Sigma 35-70mm f/2.8-4 Standard Zoom MC. Looking at their website, there were about 4 versions of these. This (1982) and the 'Zoom Master' version (1983) were the first two and the ones having faster f/2.8-4 variable aperture. Aside from being a fast zoom, it also has the benefit of close focusing at 0.5m across the whole focal range. (Context: zoom lenses in those days usually have MFD of 1.5 meters!)
